Which one? Royalty-Free or Rights-Managed?

Our images are either “Royalty-Free” or “Rights-Managed” and the above uses will depend on the type of image.  While the licenses for both may look the same, there are important differences:

A “royalty-free” image has the following features:

  • a license for its use is always granted on a non-exclusive basis – in other words, we can issue the same license for the same image to anyone who wants to license the image
  • the image may be used anywhere – the license is worldwide
  • the image may be used any time – the license is perpetual
  • the image may be used multiple times by multiple people within your organization
  • pricing is based on the image resolution you choose and the number of people within your organization that you wish to have access to the image

A “rights-managed” image has the following features:

  • a license may be exclusive or non-exclusive
  • generally speaking, no one else will be granted the right to use the image in a manner that conflicts with your use of the image – we “manage” what rights are granted and to whom they are granted
  • the image may be used only within the specific territory that you choose when you place an order
  • the image may be used for a certain amount of time that you choose when you place an order
  • the image may not be used by anyone other than you unless you choose sublicensing options when you place an order
